Yo Vikings!: A Play for All Ages

After working tirelessly for months, Leesville Road High School proudly presented, “Yo Vikings!” on November 15 through the 17, with a small preview on the 14.

Needless to say, I was shocked in the best way possible. Originally, I expected the show to be good as usual, but thought I might not enjoy it as much since it’s a children’s musical. I was wrong.

The musical was incredibly entertaining and instead of being something intense, like Dr. Faustus, or crazy high stakes, like Bring It On, it was just the story of a little girl with an imagination.

The show stars sophomore Callie Colvard, as 10-year-old Emma Katz (later known as her viking name “Emma the Red”) who has a wild imagination, but others simply view her as a weirdo.

The cast is comprised of mostly underclassmen and juniors, with a few seniors sprinkled in. Actors were mostly split into two groups, either vikings or classmates with supporting characters such as the wise librarian Mr. Sigurd, played by Luke Hesla, junior and Emma’s mom, played by Anne-Sophia Hill, junior.

The musical shows Emma’s journey as she adventures through her life, trying to find herself through her strange costumes and stories found in books provided by Mr. Sigurd.

When watching the musical, it’s clear to see the immense talent in all of the actors and actresses, as well as the techies. Scenes like the red dragon or viking boat exemplified how much time and effort students put into this musical.

I loved the performance by Callie Colvard. She is so gifted in acting and has an incredible singing voice; she clearly does the role of Emma justice. I felt like I was a part of Emma’s adventure watching the play.

If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, go support the theatre and see Yo Vikings! Tickets can be found online at lrhsprideproductions.com or sold at the door for $10 and viewing times are 7 p.m. on November 16 and 17, as well as 2 p.m. on November 17.
