Who knew? State Fair offers healthy food

How do you eat fried butter?

Apparently, it is served on a stick.

It is officially State Fair season, and thousands of people are entering the fairgrounds with one purpose only: to destroy their health.

Rosalee Bailey, senior, strategically plans an assault against her body before attending the fair.

“It’s a tradition I try not to deviate from. Clogging your arteries takes proper planning,” said Bailey.

Once she enters the fair, Bailey makes a beeline for a free hush-puppy at a church tent . “It’s free, it’s delicious, and it’s a smart investment,” she said.

After noshing on greasy fried dough, Bailey grabs a giant turkey leg, an extra large lemonade, and corn with extra butter and salt.

“Once I feel a little sick, I polish all of that off with a deep-fried Milky Way,” Bailey added with a smirk.

Dakota Rose, senior, is going to the Fair for the first time, and unlike Bailey, she is in search of healthy snacks to nosh on.

“I kind of don’t want to get a heart attack. Is it even possible to find something that isn’t deep-fried and on a stick?”

One can understand Rose’s concern. According to Calorie King, that butter on a stick is 800 calories and 88 grams of fat before it is battered and deep-fried.

With “food” like this sold to the masses, people forget that the fair also offers healthy options.

If you go to a candy apple stand, they may look at you like you are crazy, but you can obtain a candy-free, locally grown, crisp apple.

You can also eat the roasted corn, forgoing the copious amounts of butter and salt ,of course.

Chocolate-covered frozen bananas are only 160 calories which is a healthier trade off to the 470 calorie deep-fried Snickers bar.

Perhaps the biggest smack in the face to unhealthy fair food is salad—on a stick. Basically, salad on a stick is made with iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and green peppers on a skewer with a side of dressing.

More of a rip-off than a good deal, your best bet would probably be to forgo the expensive salad on a stick (seven dollars for two skewers?) for an actual salad.

Christie Thrower, senior, fills up on salad first before eating anything unhealthy.

“ I like to fill up on veggies first before eating anything sugary or fried. I still believe in indulging myself, but I find that it’s harder to eat junk food when you’ve filled up on the good stuff first.”

Zeeko’s  is a Greek tent that sells a lean and mean salad with hummus and pita bread for only four dollars, which fills you up and keeps you satisfied—something cotton candy certainly cannot do.

Whether you want to eat for your health, or against it, healthy options are out there.
