Are Disney’s remakes worth it?

Over the past few years, Disney is reinventing their old classic movies from Cinderella to the Lion King into live action movies. Using better technology and CGI, the movies go from the original 2D picture to a live action version featuring real actors and not animation.

This process accounts for a profit of $2,280,743,928 for all the live action Walt Disney films in the box office. This large profit changed Disney’s format to shift from traditional styles due to the rapid rate at which these movies can be produced. For example, on average a 2D animated movie can take up to 4-7 years according to Pixar’s lead animator Greg Bird. For Pixar, who focuses solely on these 2D animations can cost $50 million dollars.

While Disney continues to remake their movies, many fans expressed disinterest in seeing their favorite childhood movies over again. People do not like change, especially if they believe something is perfect the first time.

Disney and Pixar now feature 3D animated movies and the technique is used in Disney favorites such as Frozen and Moana. This style is more common now amongst animators and at this point, 2D animation is outdated. With the new technology making clearer and brighter imaging, 3D seems to offer the most for Disney.

The live action movies vary on terms of domestic box office sales. Many of the Disney princess movies see favorable results, subsequently passing its original animated movie counterpart. However, movies such as The Jungle Book and 101 Dalmations fared better in the original rather than its live action remake. In this infographic, take a look at the variation of success with the Disney movies. (Numbers provided from a Business Insider article)

With 2D animation there contains a large amount of possibility to create and imagine different objects and graphics. Animators express more abstract ideas yet must go through multiple steps to create the final product. Storyboarding is a technique used in animation where animators will plan out the scene by creating drawings, similar to what a comic strip may look like. This process can go for months and is often one of the most important steps when creating the animation.

Disney launched their schedule planning their movies through 2021 and it features almost 3-4 live action movies per year. In comparison, the number of animated movies decreased especially in 2019. This year, Disney plans to release 8 total live action films and only 2 animated films. This decrease is a massive shift for animation lovers but already confirmed in 2021 are both a Disney and Pixar animated movie.

While opinions may vary on what is more enjoyable to watch, the subsequent value of live action continues to dominate in the box office. Traditional Pixar and Disney animation will not disappear for a long time, so even if you do not love the new format, there will still be movies for you.
