Being an upperclassman comes with one more thing to worry about: decisions about college. Student Services helps juniors and seniors with anything college-related. College requires planning, and planning requires hard work.
Student Services also provides help to whomever is planning on not attending college. Students who do not go to college go into the workforce, military, or take a gap year.
Counselors talk to juniors in groups to get general interest information. Junior meetings also involve talking about the upcoming senior year. Preparing for college needs to start as early as possible. College is something juniors should always think about.
Seniors have individual meetings with counselors to be as personable as possible. In an email, Sarah Oxendine, Se-Z counselor, wrote “90%; 70% to 4-year universities [and] 20% to 2-year colleges,” of LRHS seniors show interest in college. After the initial senior meetings, counselors host return meetings to answer any questions. “College is the next step so we discuss the schools [seniors] are considering… application systems… [and] recommendations,” wrote Oxendine.
Student Services works with other departments to ensure students receive the best help. Ms. Canada is LRHS’s Career Development Coordinator and helps coordinate college visits and mini-college fairs at school. Ms. Norwood, as the leader of the Financial Aid Program, assists students with any financial problems that arise. “Wake County provides each high school with a financial aid counselor to assist students… navigate the …FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid),” noted Oxendine.
Different types of counselors help everyone at Leesville succeed– post-high school is difficult without proper planning.
