It is early September, and club season is just beginning here at Leesville High School. 

Leesville has over 40 club options for students ranging from weightlifting club to a Model U.N. While choosing a club is exciting, it can also be hard to know where to start. To help with this issue, here are some potential options to get started on your search for the perfect club for you. 

Book Club:

Led by Ms. Dragone and Ms. Knightstep, LRHS librarians, the book club is a great place to connect with bibliophiles and find your next great read. Book club originally started out as everyone reading the same novel and discussing it during the meeting. A few years ago however, a change occurred in the way book clubs took place. Now, if you walk into a book club meeting club members sitting together are “sharing a different title and recommending it through book-talks,” said Ms. Knightstep, via email. 

“In addition to reading/recommending things to read, our book club started getting together each month to play trivia games,” said Ms. Knightstep. In the past they have played games with themes like banned books and teen reads. 

Book club meets using the google meet platform. If you are interested in joining the book club, their first meeting will be September 16 at 12:30 just click here to join. 

LEO Club:

Leadership, experience, and opportunity club, also known as the LEO club, is a service organization built from the youngest members of the Lions Club. “Traditionally we would participate in service projects like adopting a highway cleanup, the Bryce Martin Foundation festival, and fundraising for the Ronald Mcdonald house,” said Ms. Cade, LEO club leader, via email. 

Though the LEO club is unable to meet in person for the first semester this year they are using the google meet platform to get together. Second semester they hope to start their highway cleanups socially distanced.

Creative Journaling Club: 

“The Creative Journaling Club (CJC) was formed in September 2018 by a group of students who believed there would be an interest in the art of maintaining a Bullet Journal,” said Ms. Engdahl, club leader via email. Their club teaches bullet journaling techniques while also being a place where members can relax, and socialize with their peers.

Today the club has reached honor club status. Even with online school, “Aditi Yerra (president)  Hae “Esther” Lee (VP) and Shani Inbari (VP) have been working on ideas to keep that feeling of camaraderie and friendship alive even when the members are meeting from home,” said Ms. Engdahl, club leader. 

Creative journaling club will be getting together over using google meets.

Chess Club:

Whether you are a chess king or just a beginner, “Chess club is a great place to make new friends who enjoy a shared interest in having fun,” said Mr. Moran, chess club leader, via email. 

Chess club will not be meeting in person this year, but will instead be using an online platform; the exact one they are using has yet to be determined but it will most likely be a combination of lichess.org for games and google meets to share information.

These are just a few of the large variety of clubs Leesville High School has to offer this year. Even though COVID-19 is keeping us home, the Leesville community continues to find ways to connect students, and encourage friendships.
