Zendaya, 24-year-old actress, made history on Sunday (the 20th) at the Emmy awards for her role in the hit HBO show “Euphoria.”
The actress was nominated for one of the biggest categories of the night, “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.” Zendaya was up against names such as Jennifer Anniston, Laura Linney, and the category’s favorite, Sandra Oh.
Many were joyfully surprised when Zendaya became the youngest actress to win the category for her role as “Rue.” The virtual award show cut cameras to the actress as she accepted her award.
“This is pretty crazy,” she said as she held her Emmy in her hands. Watch her acceptance video here.
Being the ex Disney star to have had the best transition from Disney is a very much worthy title for Zendaya. Zendaya has had huge roles since her Disney days on hit shows “Shake It Up” and “KC Undercover;” most notably in “The Greatest Showman” and her Emmy winning drama series, “Euphoria.”
“Euphoria” is a series created by Sam Levinson. It tells the story of high school students who are adventuring through life, running into a number of circumstances including love, drugs, and identity. The show, which premiered in 2019, has done remarkably well, receiving six Emmy nominations.
The series has been renewed for a second season, and filming has recently begun with an expected premiere to be in 2021.
Zendaya ended her speech giving thanks and acknowledging the workers behind the screens; “I see you, I admire you, I thank you,” she said.
