During the COVID-19 pandemic, starting a small business appealed to people of all ages. It was a good way to fill time and make money for those that lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
However, Macon Funderburk — a young adult from Raleigh, North Carolina — did not start her small business for a traditional reason.
Funderburk started her business called Rings By Macon in November of 2020. She wrote the following under her first Instagram post on @rings_bymacon:
“Did you know that the Cape Fear Region is home to almost 500 people living without shelter? While I believe that no individual should have to worry about where their next meal comes from, the reality is that hunger is a widespread problem ravaging the houseless population. This is why Rings By Macon is dedicated to spending 100% of all profits on meal cards for those without shelter in Wilmington, NC.”
On Etsy, Funderburk sold a variety of rings. After receiving many orders, she was able to buy gift cards to TacoBell and Subway for people without homes in Wilmington.
All rings were under $10, and came with a personal note.
Rings By Macon is currently sold out, and there is no prediction as to when Funderburk will be back, but the motive behind this business can be inspirational to aspiring small business owners of all ages.
