Dual Enrollment, or College Career Promise (CCP), is a free program set up by the state of North Carolina where high school students can gain early college credits or their associate’s degree.
All six Wake Tech campuses host the program. Students can take in-person, online, or hybrid classes.
Students can either gain credits to be transferred over to a four-year college (College Transfer Pathway/CTP) or they can work to get complete college credits in high school (College and Technical Education/CTE).
To enroll students must meet the eligibility requirements for their grade and pathway (CTP or CTE) as listed on the CCP website.
CTP students have the option to get an associate degree in art, engineering, visual art, or science. CTE students have many more options. They can choose from things like health sciences, accounting, plumbing, and more.
According to The Public School Review, dual enrollment programs “often save students money on tuition…[and] students may explore fields of study that help them choose a major later.”
This makes dual enrollment and CCP programs ideal for lower-income students, students who don’t know what they want to major in, and students who don’t plan on attending a four-year college but want a degree or a certification in a certain field.
The main distinction between doing dual enrollment and taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes is you only need to maintain a C or higher to earn college credit. In AP classes, “students must pass exams for these classes to earn college credit”— plus, in CTP students can leave high school with an associate’s degree.
