Students at high schools with block scheduling, who have exams for the first semester must take them after winter break. Students have to take exams after winter break because of the 2012 senate bill number 107.
A 1.5-hour test is not an adequate way to measure someone’s knowledge of work over an entire semester.
Bill 107 states that North Carolina schools should start no earlier than the Monday closest to august 26 and end no later than the Friday closest to June 11.
Wake county requires every semester to be at least 90 days. At the end of the semester, students must take the required exams for the classes they are taking.
Since North Carolina can’t start school until after August 26, then it makes it impossible for schools to get in 90 days for the entire semester before the winter break.
In order for students to take the exams before winter break, senate bill number 107 would have to be repealed to allow schools to start earlier.
Even with winter break supplying more time for students to study, most students will not use that time to study.
During winter break students want to vacation, hang out with friends, and spend time with family. Unfortunately, few teens have the self-discipline to study for a final over a long break.
Teens are more likely to study for their exams if they are already in the school state of mind.
Students are also more likely to be stress-free during the holidays if they don’t have the stress of exams looming over their shoulders.
Yes, while a winter break makes more time to study and prepare for your exams, for some students, after 2 weeks of break and no studying, finals do not reflect their actual academic knowledge.
Based on a student poll, out of 65 students, 51 said they would rather have finals before winter break. When some of those students were asked why they chose to have the exam before break, they said that they didn’t want to have to worry about having to study for an exam or be stressed over their time off from school.
Some of the respondents that said no were also asked why they chose no. The students said that they would rather have more time to study and that they felt it would be less stressful for them to study over the winter break and be prepared for their exams.
Exams are stressful, so taking them before the winter break can help relieve some stress over the holidays.
