Since 2020, the Leesville Community has been dedicated to supporting the Murphy Scholarship funds through the annual Turkey Trot.
In honor of the first principal, Richard J. Murphy, Leesville created the Murphy Scholarship in 2011. Every year seniors, normally two, are gifted with the opportunity of receiving the scholarship to assist them with their further education.
The largest fundraiser for the scholarship is the Leesville Community Turkey Trot!
Last year, 2022, the Turkey Trot had more than 700 participants and raised over $8,000 for the scholarship funds. The event hopes to continue to grow in numbers and success.
This is an annual event that starts at 8:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning at the Harrington Grove clubhouse. It is a 5k through the Harrington Grove neighborhood. Some participants chose to run, while others chose to walk with their kids or dogs.
The winner of each gender in each age category will receive a pie and a gift bag to recognize their effort.
In order to take part in this year´s 5k you must register by November 20, 2023, through the Leesville Turkey Trot website. If you register by November 7, you will receive a discounted entry fee as well as the option to purchase a t-shirt.
If you are not interested in running or walking, then there are other ways to support the fundraiser. There are volunteer opportunities such as baking pies, being a course monitor, or helping to set up. There are also sponsorship opportunities for businesses to advertise in different ways.
The Leesville Community Turkey Trot is a great way to be active with friends and family while also supporting Leesville students and their future!
