the removal of leesville’s paideia program

Until this year, the Paideia class has been beloved by everyone who has taken it. It is a combined English and social Studies course that utilizes more social and collaborative learning methods.

According to paideia.org, Paideia is a class that “advocates that all learners practice the critical thinking, communication skills, and attitudes necessary to earn a living, be an active citizen, and pursue a meaningful life.”

Paideia was offered at Leesville since the school’s beginnings.  The course consisted of socialized learning, having students participate in “seminars” to discuss certain topics, building valuable soft skills.

Many people at Leesville widely enjoyed the class. Students cited loving the social aspect of the class.  “I enjoyed Paideia by getting to make new friends and completing group projects,” said Jake Kriwox, Sophomore.

According to a teacher, Wake County School System removed Paideia as a class option around 4 years ago. However, the principal at the time decided to keep the class for a few more years. As of this year, Paideia was removed from the Leesville school roster by Principal Jacobs, vowing to follow the traditional WCPSS class roster instead.

Many former Paideia students have expressed their disappointment about the removal of the class. “It was disappointing to hear because my two Paideia classes last year were probably my two best classes and teachers I’ve ever had,”  Gaby Lefcheck, a sophomore.

The Paideia course is widely missed by everyone who had the opportunity to attend. Students, such as Alexis Engelson, have attempted to bring forth a request to bring the class back, but there is little hope of seeing the course back on the roster next year.
