Junior varsity’s last game was a win, but not everybody may have known that, as people don’t really get super excited about junior varsity as compared to varsity, especially in football.

Last Game

On September 12, the JV squad went up against Heritage and won the game 26-6. 

“We won by around 20 points, and our whole team played as a team and as a family,” said Austin Moye, sophomore and wide receiver.

The game was pretty slow during the first half. Luke Samranruen — freshman, backup QB and kick holder for the team — said, “We started off bad 6-0 at the half and missed an extra point. I’m glad we turned it around.”

“The running backs played a great game, and it was a great game for the team,“ said Bryce Thomas, freshman and starting quarterback for Leesville JV.

However, not a lot of students were there to see it. “Mostly only family members go to the JV games,” said Moye.

Practice

Junior varsity has practices on most days. “We walk through things as a team, and we go through our individual positions and work on what we need to,” said Samranruen.

They practice just as hard as varsity, and people may not even consider that. They [train] on “work ethic and how much energy [they] put into the team,” said Moye.

Why you should go

“People should go to the JV games because JV has talent as well, and the games can be just as exciting as the varsity,” said Thomas. “I think the varsity gets more attention than the junior varsity because everyone thinks they are better than the JV.”

Which may be partially true: If you pit varsity against JV, Varsity would most likely win, but in terms of performance, Leesville JV is currently playing very well at 4-0.

“I have not personally been to a JV game because I don’t know a lot of the players on any of the teams and more people go to the varsity games,” said Logan LaRue, senior. “I think JV is seen as more of a minor league to the varsity teams, like how it is in professional sports.”

“It’s like the NFL or college, NFL will obviously be bigger,” said Adam Sonye, sophomore and linebacker. People still have a college football team that they support but may not watch every game like some do with the NFL.

“I feel that junior varsity should get more support because we practice really hard throughout the whole week, and when it’s game day, we want to show the fans how much work we have put in,” said Moye.

Another reason that JV games might not be getting as much attention is the fact that varsity is hyped up on social media with themes.

“Varsity in my opinion gets more attention than junior varsity because they get more fans and more notice on social media while junior varsity really doesn’t get that,” said Moye.

Even announcing and inviting people out would probably help more support on the JV games.

“They should go to the games and show us the same love they do for varsity,” said Samranruen.

“We should treat the games like varsity games, and encourage more school spirit and attendance like how the varsity games are,” said LaRue.

The JV squad puts in a lot of work and has a good time out on the field, so next time you have a free Thursday, take some time to show them some support, and you might have just as good of a time as a varsity game.
