The SAT and ACT tests, oftentimes are thought as unfair and not the best way to measure how successful a student will be in the future.
In college tours the students and head of admissions will often tell you that they don’t really pay attention to test scores unless it comes down to a tie between you and a very close candidate.
One problem is that these tests don’t measure important skills like creativity, problem-solving, or emotional intelligence. Instead, they focus on memorizing facts and using test-taking strategies that don’t really apply to real-world situations.
Another big issue is that wealthier students can pay for expensive prep classes and tutors, which gives them an advantage over students who can’t afford these resources. This creates an uneven playing field where some students have more opportunities to improve their scores.
Many smart students who aren’t great at standardized tests can end up with lower scores, even if they do well in school.
On top of that, the pressure to get a high score creates a lot of stress and anxiety for students. Test anxiety can cause some students to do worse than they normally would, even if they’re strong students in their classes.
Studies have shown that high school grades are a better way to predict college success than SAT or ACT scores. That’s why more colleges are moving toward test-optional or test-blind policies, realizing these exams aren’t the best measure of student potential.
