SHAWN, Shawn Mendez’s new album

Shawn Mendez began to release his music in 2015 but took a break after his release of the album WONDER in 2020. Shawn canceled the tour due to mental health, making his newly released album SHAWN highly anticipated.

When Mendez first teased the album in July, many people speculated over this album’s difference to Mendez’s previously released music. When I first discover his new music, I was enthused and have been listening to his music for years. This album is filled with many tracks each with a different meaning.

He previously released songs from the album including “why, why, why”, Isn’t that enough, and “Heart of Gold.” These songs truly set the scene for this album and its meaning. These songs showed the raw parts of Mendez that he seemed to be hiding from the public eye.

At first listen, his song “Heart of Gold” is seemingly on a light heated topic, and very upbeat. When Mendez introduced this song both on tour and in his concert film on the album, he introduced the song by explaining its inspiration. The song was described as being about his childhood friend, with whom he lost touch and later found out that he died in his sleep of an overdose.

While not everyone can resonate with losing someone due to overdose, many people –including myself– can relate to losing someone close to them, making this song a truly relatable part of the album.

This album highlights many of the struggles Mendez has gone through and resonates strongly with a lot of listeners. All of this coupled with the raw emotion in the album make it a wonderful album that many would enjoy.
