Leesville High Disagrees with GroundHog’s Day prediction

The Groundhog Day tradition dates back to 1887 with German origins and is celebrated on February 2 in the US and Canada. According to folklore, if the groundhog sees its shadow due to clear skies, there will be six more weeks of winter; if not, spring will come early.

This year, the famous Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, predicting 6 more weeks of winter weather in 2025.

Many students prefer the idea of sooner spring weather because of seasonal depression, sunnier weather, spring activities and the upcoming summer break.

“Even though the groundhog said there is more winter, I feel like summer is right around the corner,” said Ava Neuheimer, senior.

“I am excited for the warmer weather for summer break vacations and swimming under the warm sun,” said Lily Myers, junior.

On the other hand, some students are excited to hear about the groundhogs prediction. The longer winter season brings a comfy feeling among students’ lives.

Caroline Scioli, junior, said, “I am happy about the concept of longer winter because I enjoy wearing hoodies to school, and I do not like the hot weather that makes me sweaty.”

Although the groundhog has only been accurate 30% of the time from 2019-2023, it is an amusing holiday that “predicts” the future.
