There are three levels for certain classes with different amounts of workloads. The three types are advanced placement (AP), honors, and academic. In the beginning of March, students start to add new classes to their future schedule.
Academic classes are considered the base level in a class. Students take these classes when looking for a more personal environment with lots of individual help from teachers.
Lyla Ferguson, sophomore, said, “For math, we were able to do less problems than the other honors kids in the class.”
Honors classes are the next level up. These classes require more responsibility at a more challenging stage than academics. They have harder assignments than academic classes but it’s different in each class.
When deciding between class levels, time management is important. The harder the class, the more time you need to spend studying and doing homework. This is a big responsibility that needs to be taken into account when picking classes.
Caroline Murray, sophomore, said, “There’s a big jump from honors classes to APs. There’s also a lot more homework, and you definitely have to study more. Homework took me less than an hour for honors classes but more around two for APs.”
The most challenging class level is AP. Advanced placement classes learn about more topics at a greater difficulty. In less amounts of time, students are expected to learn more.
George Shrager, sophomore, said, “In AP classes you are asked to make more connections between various topics. It’s also just a much more expansive workload, and you learn a lot more in such a short period of time.”
Picking classes is important because the levels also impact your GPA. The harder the class, the bigger credit in your GPA. Academic classes are worth 4.00 for an A. Honors classes are worth 4.50 for an A. AP classes are worth 5.00 for an A.
Overall, time management is important when choosing classes. The amount of notes and skill level needs to be accounted for too.
