On Saturday, February 8th, the LRHS Dance Team took home a big win at Green Level Dance Team invitational, walking away with first place in D1 hip hop and the Judge’s Choice Award.
This is their second year winning first place in the hip-hop category. Additionally, last year they secured first place for best choreography.
“I think we wanted to stick with the theme of hip hop because we had that last year and so we were thinking of something more new in terms of being popular, but not too cheesy, so we went with Kendrick Lamar. I think it fits perfectly just from the way he’s kind of blown up this year,” said Zara Desai, senior, and choreographer.
The women performed to a mashup of some of Kendrick Lamar’s hits including N95, Alright, Kings Dead, and XXX.
The choreography, made by seniors, Fiona Bennear, Jaidee Hernandez, Tristan Taylor, and Zara Desai, was fast, hard-hitting, and energetic.
“We really wanted to have a cohesive piece. There were four choreographers, so we all picked songs and choreography that matched, ” said Bennear.
The team has to work simultaneously to prepare for this competition and continue to perform during the basketball season. The win makes for long hours and extra rehearsals.
“The basketball games, we are more just there as entertainment, but [at the competition] we are the ones being judged and people are like giving us a reward …It’s like validation for the work we put in,” said Bennear.
As their season end, the girls look forward to going on a field trip to New York in March, and having another great season next year!
