The first few years of high school for the class of 2025 had some challenges, after Covid-19 it was hard for schools to get back to normal. A lot of the seniors when high school started went to school in person wearing masks while some students still did virtual classes.
Covid-19 happened in 2020 which cut off the class of 2025 7th grade year and made them miss their 8th grade year. Class of 2025 is the first class since Covid-19 to have all 4 years of high school and they also never experienced being top of their school.
It was hard for the Class of 2025 to transition from middle school and being online to going to high school and being in person. It was hard because some students had to start from scratch because they didn’t learn anything from 8th grade which was a struggle for them academically.
“In 8th grade I didn’t really learn anything because we were virtual and so when transitioning to high school I didn’t know what was going on which made me struggle at first,” said Tatiana Collins, senior.
Not only was the class of 2025 struggling academically, but they were also struggling socially like meeting new friends or simply just socializing.
“I struggled a little bit to meet new friends. It was definitely hard to communicate with people after being online,” said Sophie Wierzbicki, senior.
Adjusting to the transition from virtual to in person so fast also had an effect on some people’s mental Health. For some students it felt good being in the same room as their friends and teacher. But for others it was harder because they felt so comfortable being at home for a long time and when it came down to being in person they struggled to adapt to the social and academic pressure of high school.
“It was easy to wake up in the morning in my bed and open my laptop to get to a Google meeting. But when I was a freshman, I struggled to get in the routine of having to wake up and get out of bed and go to school because I didn’t do that 8th grade year,” said Destiny Blount, senior.
To celebrate the class of the 2025 Shejuanna Jacobs the principal of Leesville Road High School throws celebrations throughout the school year just for the seniors.
“Being a senior means being at the top and when there are celebrations only for seniors, it makes me feel motivated and special,” said Blount.
