From computer screens to the cinemas: A Minecraft Movie

On April 4, 2025, A Minecraft Movie arrived on the big screens all across the US. The movie, as revealed by the title, is based on the well-known video game, Minecraft, by Mojang Studios.

“I still come back to [Minecraft] every once in a while, mostly because of boredom. I mostly like the multiplayer, being able to play with friends in a single world,” said Christian Pack, junior, over text.

“I’ll have a couple of phases [of Minecraft] every now and then,” said Colin Gillespie, senior.

In the movie, four people are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into a cubic world that flourishes on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world, while setting about on a quest with an unexpected expert crafter.

Delays

First teases of the movie go back to February 28, 2014, when Minecraft’s creator Markus Persson (aka Notch) posted a tweet announcing Mojang’s partnership with Warner Bros. The first official release date was scheduled for May 24, 2019, which was postponed due to creative differences between the original director, Shawn Levy, and the Mojang developers.

Later, a new director was hired, but because of the global pandemic, Warner Bros. had to replan its movie release schedule. After over 10 years of production and many changes, the first official trailer came out on Nov 19, 2024.

The Movie

The trailer introduces viewers to a group of adventurers who find themselves transported into the blocky realm of the Overworld. The group includes Jason Momoa as Garett “Garbage Man” Garrison, Emma Myers as Natalie, Sebastian Hansen as Henry, and Danielle Brooks as Dawn. Along their adventure, they meet an expert crafter Steve, played by Jack Black, who helps them with their journey to find the Earth Crystal and go back home.

For Minecraft fans, the movie brings back a ton of nostalgia and memories. For example, the clever mention of the deceased Minecraft Youtuber Technoblade; Steve refers to the pig with a crown as “a Legend,” to pay respect to one of the most popular Minecraft players of all time.

“The movie itself was alright, a good 6/10, but the experience is what made it a 10/10. Everyone was there to enjoy a movie even if it was kinda mid, just because it’s about a game they all love. It’s amazing,” said Pack, over text.

I totally agree with Pack. The movie did not feature a deep plot with twists and turns, but I don’t think anyone came to this exact movie for that. It was a really fun, comical, and laid-back film, which I’d recommend everyone to watch, especially if you are a Minecraft fan.
