Pitch Perfect is the perfect comedy

The cast of the sassy Barden Bella girls pose dramatically. Pitch Perfect is a musical comedy centered around college a capella groups.

Pitch Perfect  is a genuinely funny movie that breaks the mold of melodramatic teen singing competitions. Directed by Jason Moore, the hilarious a capella movie premiered Oct. 5. Pitch Perfect is a comedy and a musical performance. Beca (Anna Kendrick), the protagonist, shakes up the Bellas, a female a capella group with current music remixes.

The Trebles, a rival a capella group, provide comedy ammunition to the fiery and unusual Bella girls. Trash talk between Aubrey (Anna Camp), leader of the Bellas, and Bumper (Adam Devine), Treble frontman creates dramatic and humorous tension between the groups in pursuit of victory at competitions. The a capella rivalry becomes a race to win no matter what.

Aubrey comes off as the most annoying character because she refuses to let anyone else have input in how to ready the group for a capella competitions. She is harsh to her fellow Bellas because of their losing track record to the Trebles. At the Bellas’ induction ceremony, Aubrey makes the girls swear to not sleep with any guys in the Trebles, or they would be banned for life.

Clever one liners from Lilly (Hana Mae Lee), the quiet Asian girl, and Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), provide an enjoyable distraction from the a capella contest induced stress.

Lilly’s strange outbursts throughout the movie turn heads. “I ate my twin in the womb,” was among one of her funnier and most unusual lines. I found myself waiting expectantly to hear Lilly say something audible and was never disappointed with her random, creepy statements.

Fat Amy, my favorite character, has witty lines that reflect her larger than life personality. Her best line is from a scene when Bumper says, “I sometimes have the feeling we should kiss.” Fat Amy shoots back, “I sometimes have a feeling I can do crystal meth, but then I think, hmmm … better not.”

Pitch Perfect is like a young girl’s dream combination of Mean Girls and High School Musical. Beca fulfills the role of the unpopular girl with a hidden talent which is revealed at the end of the story, and also gets the guy.

I felt the humor was perfectly balanced between crude and clever. Pitch Perfect is politically correct enough for young children, but had jokes inappropriate enough to appeal to an older Glee crowd. Adult language makes the rating PG-13, but in my opinion, profanities are not overdone.

Pitch Perfect is the kind of laugh-inducing, feel-good movie to see with best friends or a boyfriend. The spectacularly funny and talented cast leaves audiences wanting more. The unique combination of a comedic plot line with fantastic singing and acting reeks of a cult classic. It will, without a doubt, be a massive hit.
