French Club spent the afternoon of February 5 making valentines for the patrons of Sunnybrook Nursing Home in Raleigh.
This is one of the service projects that French Club does throughout the year in order to both help the community and maintain their status as an honor club.
“Since French is affectionately called ‘the language of love,’ we thought it would be fun and relevant to share a little French with residents of Sunnybrook Nursing Home on the day that celebrates love – Valentine’s Day. We made home-made cards with expressions written in French and English,” said Cassie West, French Club advisor, via email.
The French also have similar traditions to the Americans, with exchanges of cards, chocolates and flowers.
This exchange is believed to be have been brought about by the French Duke of Orleans, who, while imprisoned in London, sent letters to his wife.
“France and Paris are romantic places; French is a romance language; this is an expression of French culture as well as a way to be nice to people,” said Amanda Johnson, junior.
The club made 110 valentines this year. West and members are taking a trip after school on February 14 to deliver the cards.
