2013 is a big year for the movie industry. With highly anticipated films like The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Thor: The Dark World coming out later this year, there is excitement among moviegoers everywhere.
A film we can expect later this year is The Wolf of Wall Street. This is a movie people have been talking about since 2007, when Leonardo DiCaprio, actor, first gained rights to the incredible story.
The Wolf of Wall Street is a biographical drama film based on the memoir written by Jordan Belfort.
Directed and produced by Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street will star Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort, who will act alongside Matthew McConaughey and Jonah Hill.
The memoir, also entitled The Wolf of Wall Street, focuses on Belfort’s life as the owner of brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont. This firm doubled as a business “boiler room,” a place where questionable investments were marketed over the telephone.
Due to his unethical and manipulative methods of money, Belfort earned the nickname “The Wolf of Wall Street,” hence the name of his book. Belfort and his sleazy staff were also known for their excessive drug use and party-hard lifestyle.
DiCaprio took an immediate interest in Belfort’s memoir because of the blatant honesty and “transparency” found throughout the story. He knew immediately that it needed to be made into a film.
“There was nothing Jordan wouldn’t divulge, no matter how intimate or embarrassing,” said DiCaprio in an interview with Vulture.
DiCaprio also appreciated the ever-present theme of Belfort’s memoir.
“The book personified America’s addiction to obtaining wealth at all costs, and that hasn’t changed,” said DiCaprio in Vulture interview.
Many members of this all-star cast spent weeks with present day stock brokers in order to get a new perspective on the lives they would soon portray. DiCaprio even spent some time with Jordan Belfort himself, taking notes on things Belfort didn’t include in his memoir.
“I wanted a close relationship with him so that I could weave intimate details into the movie, things that weren’t in the book,” said DiCaprio in his interview with Vulture.
The dedication of these actors to portray their characters truthfully isn’t something you see in every film cast.
The anticipated film will include many aspects of Belfort’s career uprise and downfall, leading to his prison time and restitution of $100 million. The film will also portray the rich and greedy lifestyle he and his co-workers lived.
The Wolf of Wall Street is expected to be released November 15, 2013.
