Power to the Seniors in Powderpuff

PowderPuffOn Wednesday, October 30, Leesville held its annual Powderpuff football game. It was a warm evening with a great turnout and some serious competition.

It was a tournament consisting of three, thirty minute games. The freshmen played the juniors and the sophomores played the seniors. The winners of these two games played later in the championship.

“It was really intense; we were all stressing out,” said Emily Echols, junior.

The freshmen and juniors were stuck at 7-7 after regulation time. The freshman won the game with a touchdown in overtime, to advance 14-7.

The games were meant to be fun experiences. “But no, [the game] was serious,” said Maddy Heffron, the junior’s quarterback, after the disappointing loss.

The seniors kept the competitive spirit alive as the tournament continued. The ambitious freshman lost their confidence after watching the seniors beat the sophomores,  21-0.

“The game was pretty intense. I think as seniors we wanted to win this years because as juniors we lost to the freshman,” said Carli Astorino, the seniors’ quarterback.

The seniors played a great game, later dominating the freshmen in the the championship. Their last touchdown was on a 98-yard pass play.  As the referees commented, the senior fielded the best team they had seen.  The final score: 35-0.

“We just really came out and all of us wanted to win,” said Astorino.

Competitive teams and well fought games led to a night of cheering and amusement. The crowd was just as involved as the players and everyone had a great time.
