On Saturday Oct. 26, Leesville’s Executive Council officers and Freshman Council officers went to an event sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Student Councils. Havelock High School was hosting the 2013-2014 NCASC Eastern District’s Conference in Havelock, North Carolina.
There were about 60 students at the conference from about 10 different schools. John McLeod, the student council advisor from Havelock, spoke to the entire group when the conference began. He talked about what it takes to be a great leader, from staying in control and remaining focused to knowing when to step back and let others take the lead.
Afterwards, everyone was split into multiple groups and went around into different classrooms learning about different topics. Students from many schools were put in charge of teaching about the different topics. Everyone went to at least three classrooms and learned about different ways to improve student councils at their school. The topics ranged from good ways to fundraise to how to show teacher appreciation to how to maintain school spirit throughout the school.
Finally, an officer in the Marine Corp came and spoke to the entire group about what it takes to be a leader. He told everyone that in order to be a successful leader, one needs to find what motivates them. They need to lead because they enjoy what comes out of it. He was not talking about a material reward such as money or more power. He was talking about the rewards of seeing others succeed thanks to the leader’s help.
Not many people know what it takes to be a leader, as they are too afraid to step in in front of peers. The goal of the officers who participated was to learn how to handle leadership and apply it to their everyday lives at Leesville.
