Megan Cooksy, a freshman at LRHS, has been ice skating for nine years. She actively participates in competitions with other girls in her age group. Practices take place at The RecZone under the direction of coaches Stephanie and Andre Brydikine.
With Winter Olympics going on, winter athletics are on everyone’s mind. Sports ranging from hockey and snowboarding to curling and ice skating are on television screens in millions of homes.
“I was the first in my family to start skating, but my brother Adrienne has been playing hockey for a couple of years now,” said Cooksy of her family’s history in the rink. “I love skating and the feeling I get when I’m on the ice.”
Though many associate ice skating with winter, Cooksy manages to find the balance between her skating and her school work by participating in competitions during the summer. A couple of years ago, she traveled to Florida for a skating competition.
When talking about her future in skating, Cooksy said, “Once I get to college it will probably get harder to continue skating, but I will try to keep skating because I really love it.”
