One year ago since St. Patrick’s Day, I discovered Veronica Mars and became an instant fan of the tough as nails, soft as a marshmallow teen detective. After learning about show creator Rob Thomas’ Kickstarter campaign to resurrect Veronica Mars, I immediately jumped on board. Finally, there would be resolution to the Piz-Veronica-Logan love triangle and minor characters would return to cause mayhem and essentially drag Veronica back to Neptune.
All of these expectations were certainly fulfilled. However, I was left with a sense that the 107 minutes just couldn’t match the nostalgic wonder that Veronica Mars the show left me with.
After eight years since the show ended, Veronica Mars the movie mimicked the show’s style but without the extended build up and resolution of a mystery fans are accustomed to. Yes, basic elements were solved; the murderer was caught, Veronica chooses between Piz and Logan, and there were fantastic and witty moments between Veronica and minor characters in certain scenes that only true Veronica Mars fans would catch.
These scenes were hit and miss as Thomas had to balance pleasing longtime fans with witty references from the series as well as maintaining a believable storyline. In that way, I was pleased but somewhat disappointed, even Logan’s romantic recitation of his “epic love” speech to Veronica felt contrived in because it broke their natural conversational flow and chemistry together.
Veronica Mars the movie essentially left this Kickstarter contributor hungry for the unpredictable antics and alluring mystery which brought Veronica back to Neptune High to begin with. Luckily, due to its successful opening weekend, Thomas and fans may be able to give Veronica Mars a new life in a sequel. Until then, Marshmallows are again, left waiting.
