On the Friday, March 28, Leesville Road High School’s executive council headed up to Mount Airy, North Carolina for the Annual NCASC state convention.
Seven representatives from Leesville’s executive council were chosen to attend this convention under the supervision of the council’s advisor, Ms. Mayfield.
The convention lasted from Friday night to midday Sunday and was filled with activities and lectures — all concerning leadership. The slogan of the weekend was “Super leaders, Everyday heroes”. All attendees were encouraged to fulfill their potential through being a hero in their communities through leading in any capacity that they could.
“I thought the state conference was a really great resource. I had a bunch of fun teaching one of the resource areas for the first time and I feel like I gave out some good information to people. It also helps you network and make connections with other schools and promotes idea-sharing,” said Hannah Daley, student body president.
Aside from being an opportunity to improve leadership, the state convention held an election for several state council positions such as District Chairs, President-Elect, First Vice President and Secretary. Speeches were given by the candidates for each position and there were Q&A sessions for the attendees to ask the candidates anything they wanted to know about their campaigns. Each school’s council casted their votes on Sunday morning before the convention adjourned.
Before Leesville cast their votes, they received two prestigious awards on Saturday night — they were declared an honors council (a recognition that shows that our student council program goes above and beyond), and Hannah Daley was inducted into the NCASC hall of fame, a recognition of her above-and-beyond commitment to her position as student body president. Both of these awards took a lot of work on the part of both Daley and the entire council.
To gain honor council, Daley and the other executive council officers had to increase their efforts towards the activities that they partake in at Leesville. They generally did the same activities and events but put more effort into them. On top of increasing their involvement, they had to record all of their efforts in a portfolio, which took about three weeks of intense work.
Overall, Leesville’s student council proved their excellence at the state convention, all while picking up more tools to be better leaders for the Leesville community.
