The movie The Maze Runner, based off of the book by James Dashner, came to theaters on September 19. The movie received mixed reviews from critics, most of them low, but most moviegoers are raving about it.
The Maze Runner is set in a dystopian society, where a large group of teenage boys, specifically Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), are stuck in a maze and the only way to escape is to understand why they’re there. The Maze Runner has a new arrival to the maze each month, always a male. A day after Thomas arrives, Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) comes into the maze, shocking the maze dwellers by being the first girl there.
The boys, along with Teresa, have to make it out of the maze and deal with grievers, robot-like spiders, which dwell within the maze. “Runners” have the job of mapping out the maze by running through it each day. However, every night, the maze’s layout shifts. The runners have to make it out before the walls close each night, or they are left to the grievers. No one is said to survive a night, but Thomas makes it and gains progress in figuring out the maze.
Walking into the movie, I had mild expectations from the reviews I had read. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 6 out of ten, and IMDB.com gave it 7 out of 10. The movie met my expectations, capturing my attention with many plot twists. Although there may have been quite a lot of surprises, it kept the movie interesting rather than slowly boring me to death.
With random additions to the plot throughout the movie, it was hard to keep up. The movie was riveting, but the ending was not satisfying. The movie is part of trilogy, so it wasn’t a surprise that not every question I had was answered in the end. Most of the plot was resolved, but the cliffhanger at the end left much to the imagination.
