High schools across Wake County plan to incorporate STUNT into their spring sports season. Wake County is the first in North Carolina to offer the sport in high schools. STUNT was only offered at a collegiate level but has recently become more and more popular among high schools.
STUNT is a sport derived from cheerleading. It takes the stunting and tumbling aspects of cheerleading and incorporates them into a competition. Like football, there are four quarters and a halftime. The first quarter is partner stunts, the second quarter pyramids and tosses, the third is group jumps and tumbling, and the fourth quarter is team performance. There are six potential routines that each team must prepare to perform. Whichever team has possession will pick the routine, usually the one that benefits them in order to gain points. Like any other sport, the STUNT team with the most points at the end wins the “game”.
“I am interested in STUNT because it is a new sport and I’m excited to be a part of something new and up and coming in the cheer world,” said Carlie Sellers, junior. “STUNT will help the school because it will offer other students an opportunity to be a part of cheerleading in a different way,” said Sellers.
There has not yet been a coach named or tryout dates set for STUNT. More information will become available as the season draws nearer.
